  • What is a tax-free IRA donation?

A tax-free IRA donation, also known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), allows individuals age 70½ or older to donate directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualified nonprofit. These donations can be excluded from taxable income.

How does a tax-free IRA donation benefit me?

Donating through your IRA may reduce your taxable income while allowing you to support a cause you care about. For individuals required to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs), a QCD can count toward meeting that requirement.

Who is eligible to make a tax-free IRA donation?

You must be age 70½ or older and have a traditional IRA. The donation must be made directly from your IRA administrator to the nonprofit organization.

Is there a limit to how much I can donate through my IRA?

Yes. Individuals may donate up to $100,000 per year through Qualified Charitable Distributions. Married couples may each donate up to $100,000 from their own IRAs.

Can I receive a tax deduction for an IRA charitable donation?

Because the donation is excluded from taxable income, it is not also eligible for a charitable tax deduction. However, many donors find the tax benefits comparable or more advantageous.

How do I make an IRA donation to the Reedsburg Area Food Pantry?

Contact your IRA administrator and request a Qualified Charitable Distribution payable directly to the Reedsburg Area Food Pantry. Your administrator can provide the required forms and mailing instructions.

Will I receive a receipt for my donation?

Yes. We will provide a written acknowledgment of your gift for your records. Please note that no goods or services are provided in exchange for IRA charitable donations.

Can IRA donations be used for general support?

Yes. IRA donations support our mission to provide food assistance with dignity and compassion to residents of the Reedsburg and Weston school districts, helping ensure our shelves remain stocked year-round.

Should I consult a tax professional before making an IRA donation?

Yes. We recommend speaking with a tax advisor or financial professional to determine whether an IRA charitable donation is the best option for your individual financial situation.
